Once again, it will focus upon successful case studies and evidence-based research, sharing effective tools and strategies to drive real change. The focus this year will be on the tools and strategies to build, protect and enhance thriving public spaces, and the adjacent private spaces and uses that afford well-being, social interaction, quality of life, exercise, health, and economic opportunity, for ALL the residents of cities, towns and suburbs. This year, the main venue is Le Plessis-Robinson, in the Paris region – a remarkable exemplar of suburban retrofit and transformation from a monocultural bedroom suburb to a mixed, walkable community built on universal principles of urbanism and public space. Other examples from Europe, the USA and other parts of the world will be shared. The conference will feature in-depth case studies of the Paris area, including new efforts toward a “15-minute City,” challenges of affordability and displacement, post-COVID urban interventions, and many other emerging topics. LESS fossil fuels, pollution and energy insecurity, fewer CO² emissions and consumed resources vs. MORE renewable energy sources, a better quality of life, innovation and local employment. In total, almost 20 plenary sessions will address these issues from many different perspectives: European, national, regional, inter-communal, municipal, heritage and even individual. During the discussions, multifaceted angles and viewpoints will be reflected by elected officials, experts, neuro-psychoanalysts, communicators and young people. Scalable Cities community eventFrom Solutions to System ChangeScalable Cities community eventFrom Solutions to System ChangeJune 1-2, 2022 Welcome to theScalable Cities community event “Moving from solutions to system change” hosted by theIRIS Smart Cities project on the 1st and 2nd of June in Utrecht. Cities of all sizes need to accelerate their transformation to climate-neutrality in 2050.The sense of urgency and pressure has never been higher – with a target for 100 cities to be climate neutral and a cut to EU-wide emissions in total by at least 55% by 2030. Since 2014, a pioneering group of 120 cities have been working hard to deploy over 500 solutions in more than 20 countries through the European Smart Cities and Communities Lighthouse programme. But mainstreaming these solutions and creating a system change in cities is proving challenging. For this reason, this event brings the Scalable Cities community together to ask the following question: Is it time to replicate success factors and enabling conditions, rather than solutions? Event attendees will be encouraged to share and explore the untold stories, triggers and conditions that enable cities to move on from the mere replication of technical solutions to a new innovation narrative based on a more comprehensive systems change. The interactive discussions will: Capitalise on opportunities for climate neutral and smart cities Bust replication myths and explore the realityDiscover triggers and conditions for systems-changeReframe the innovation narrative regarding the scale-up of smart city solutionsConnect with citizens & stakeholders. Expect fresh and frank takes from key actors, unconventional take-aways, inspiring walking tours and informative in-person meetings with peers.
