PED REPLICATION

In Vidin, around 71% of the CO2 emissions come from electricity consumption, which makes the housing sector the main energy-intensive consumer of the city. Two neighbourhoods have been selected to replicate the PED concept developed in the MAKING-CITY project. The first one consists of a variety of facilities (public schools and kindergartens, a train station, residential buildings, etc.) while the second, located closed to the city centre, is mostly dominated by residential housing.

As one of the 6 Follower Cities in MAKING-CITY, Vidin aims to replicate the PED approach mainly through the retrofitting of residential buildings (windows, better heating systems, etc.). This will maximise infrastructure performance and reduce energy consumption. Another key objective is the integration of renewable energy sources (solar panels and thermal solar panels) into the current grid in order to achieve self-sufficient energy production.

With around 48,000 inhabitants, Vidin is a Bulgarian city located at the borders with Romania and Serbia.
