Any investigation or planning on a city ought to consider the relationships between the parts and their connections with the living world. The dynamics of its networks (flows of energy-matter, people, goods, information and other resources) are fundamental for an understanding of the evolving nature of today’s cities. Large cities are probably the most complex mechanisms to manage. They represent a fertile ground for architects, engineers, city planners, social and political scientists, and other professionals able to conceive new ideas and time them according to technological advances and human requirements. The Sustainable City Conference addresses the multidisciplinary components of urban planning, the challenges presented by the increasing size of the cities, the number of resources required and the complexity of modern society.

Cities face unprecedented pressure to protect the health of their residents, provide access to outdoor green spaces, and address social disparities. At the same time, cities are facing rising costs from climate change, a global economic downturn and the prospect of tight municipal budgets.
Forests and other nature-based solutions (NBS) can provide valuable health and economic benefits for city residents while fighting climate change, often at good value for money. But cities can cause unanticipated problems and aggravate existing inequalities if they fail to design their forest-related plans and policies thoughtfully.
This virtual event will highlight the latest research and practice from Cities4Forests, an initiative led by more than 60 cities around the world, to better conserve, manage, and restore forests and other natural infrastructure. The event will showcase city leadership from Medellín, Colombia which has implemented an award-winning Green Corridors program.
Speakers will also demo two new online resources from Cities4Forests:Urban Forests for Healthier Cities: Policy, Planning, Regulations, and Institutional Arrangements Social Equity Considerations for Cities’ Decision Making Related to Inner, Nearby, and Faraway Forests.
These guides are being deployed as a tool to help cities adapt to climate change through the Global Commission on Adaptation’s Cities Action Track. They will also be highlighted at the upcoming Climate Adaptation Summit in January.

Smart city can be defined as a city overlaid by a digital skin, which is used not only for storing city information but overall for its governance. The 5th International Conference on Smart Data and Smart Cities will present novel research concerning the use of information and communication technologies in Smart Cities, and will also provide a forum for senior researchers, students, developers, practitioners and citizens to establish collaborations on new research projects in this domain. A smart city cannot be defined without a better involvement and connection of its citizens (smart people).
The 5th International Conference will be held virtually in Nice, France as a collaboration among the Urban Data Management Society (UDMS), the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), the Mediterranean Institute for Risk, Environment and Sustainable Development (IMREDD) of Université Côte d’Azur and the UMR 7300 ESPACE Laboratory of Geography and Urban Planing at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).

On October 15, over the course of 24 hours, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) will present for the first time the results of research into regional research and innovation needs, opportunities and priorities.
The Innovate4Cities team will present regional snapshots of identified knowledge gaps and needs for city climate ambition. In these sessions, we want to enrich these snapshots with innovative ideas, missed opportunities and partnerships. For every session we will ask a local city to offer its reflections on the presented needs and priorities. Student Energy will also bring in the voice of the youth and future leadership. Session attendees should be ready to run with adding ideas!
